My findings..

My findings..

What happened?
what happened was my plant grew well and didn't die however my kitten knocked one over

Did you get the results that you expected?
Yes, I got the results that I expected because my Hypothesis was that the plant would grow towards the light and it did

What did you discover/ find out?
I  discovered that the plant was cress and it grew fast. Cress does not need much light but the more light the better

Did you make any mistakes?
Yes,The mistake I made was that I overfilled my plant in water

Look at your data and explain what this tells you and why you think this happened

I think this tells me the plant is growing well but I need to work on giving them the same amount of water and making sure It is a place my kitten will not step on it

kite

On Friday 26th of June room 1 and 2 set to work making wonderful kites from the recycled materials they had brought especially from home. The week before in the homework they had to research about kites and collect materials. In the middle block they got into groups of 2-4, some people went by themselves. Then they started to put all their ideas together on a piece of paper to create a plan. then when everyone had finished their plan they started on their kites. There was prizes for different categories like the most traditional, best plan and the most voted.

Our group got best plan. In my group we had Stella, Ella, Erin and I

It was lots and lots of fun and we all enjoyed ourselves a lot.

we thought that this would happen

mind lab

Today we had a trip to mind lab... it was amazing! here is

some pictures :

i discovered how people were color blind, It would

be horrible if I was color blind! the challenging part was

controlling the car, I didn't know that there was a plant that

takes ten years to flower!

A great way to end our trip!!!

fact and fib

Today we did fact and fib about mind lab because we went there for a school trip... Try to work out what is fact and what is fib:

IN THE TOILETS the taps were like fountains: fact

MY ROBOT WENT backwards: fib

What do animals do in winter

Today I was reading kiwi kids news and I read an interesting fact!

What do animals do in winter

For most animals finding enough food in winter can be difficult when the main source of food like insects or green plants is in short supply.
Some animals solve this problem by hibernating. Hibernation is a deep sleep that helps them to save energy and survive the winter without eating much.
During hibernation the animal’s body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and its breathing slow down so that it does not use much energy.
Hibernating animals get ready for their winter sleep by eating extra food and storing it as body fat which they then use as energy while sleeping.
There are two types of fat – regular white fat and brown fat.  The brown fat forms patches near the animal’s brain, heart and lungs. It sends a quick burst of energy to warm these organs first when it is time to wake up.
Some of the hibernating animals include fish, frogs and turtles, which have no way to keep warm during winter. They shelter under logs, rocks and fallen leaves in the water. When the weather gets cold, they move down to the bottom of lakes and ponds and some even burrow into the mud.
Some insects also hibernate and to keep warm they find holes in the ground, under tree bark or in rotting logs. Can you name some of the animals that hibernate in the winter?
Some hibernators go into such a deep sleep that it is almost impossible to wake them, and they appear to be dead.
If the temperature falls too low some animals will awaken slightly and shiver to warm up a bit.  Even when the weather is severe, hibernators may wake up for a short period every few weeks to use their ‘toilet rooms’ and eat a little food if it is available.
Can you imagine not eating or going to the toilet all winter!!

Super Tommy

I entered the Young writers competition 2015... Here is my story

Super Tommy
Thud, thud, thud… Tommy’s worn out shoes pounded on the ground. Nothing was worse than walking to school on a cold cloudy day. All Tommy wanted was to be back in his cosy bed reading his superhero magazine.  Tommy was seven; he had brown curly hair and a cheeky smile.
Tommy had a dollar in his pocket and decided to pop into Dickenson’s Dairy and buy some sweets.
Just as he was approaching Tommy watched a strange looking couple march into the dairy.  The man had a big belly and long ginger hair, the lady had freckles, big round glasses and a funny straw hat.   Right before Tommy’s eyes the ginger man yanked open a box full of cash and stuffed into a black bag.
Tommy shot through the door and charged towards the robbers.  As he did so they reached out for him and plucked him off the ground. They hung him up on the zombie chew shelf and without saying a word sprayed him with a memory forgetting potion!
At that moment the Dairy owner leaped in shouting ‘my stuff, my money! How dare you take my money?  It was a donation for children’s hospital, Hand it back’!  ‘I’m sorry ….but it wasn't me, exclaimed Tommy ‘why would I dangle myself from a shelf’? ‘Did you see anyone come in’? No answered Tommy, I can’t remember a thing’.   Luckily he believed Tommy and eventually let him go.
Later at school, Tommy was sitting in his science class, daydreaming. Suddenly he saw a flashback in his mind of black bags overloaded with money; he also saw a straw hat and big round glasses. Next he had flashes of being sprayed in the face.
His science teacher Mrs Pickles was a kind lady with a long pointed nose and long black hair tumbling down her white lab coat.  She caught the look on Tommy’s face. ‘Tommy are you ok’? She enquired. ‘Not really’, Tommy replied.  It was then that Tommy began to explain about the events of the morning and being sprayed.  He knew something was wrong but he couldn’t quite explain it. Mrs Pickles agreed to help him unravel the mystery.
Mrs Pickles agreed to help and took a swab of Tommy’s face with some cotton wool.  After some quick tests she discovered that there were indeed traces of forgetting potion on the swab. ‘Don’t worry Tommy I know how to make a drink to help you remember everything’ explained Mrs Pickles.   They hurried to the back of the science lab where Mrs Pickles added some strange ingredients to a bowl, calling them out as she mixed them together:
‘The slime of an elephant’s trunk,
The eyeballs of one juicy fish,
One giant spoon of cabbage soup
And a gulp of red wine’.
Tommy gulped down a spoonful of the disgusting mixture ….They waited…….Tommy began to remember and explain everything. Immediately they called the police who were able to catch the culprits. ‘Well done Tommy’, said PC Plod giving him a bravery medal. ‘Just goes to show what happens when you’re honest!’  It was a victory for Tommy and the kids at the hospital who finally got their money.
That evening Tommy eventually got home, it had been the longest day ever!  After a hot bath his Mum tucked him into bed and he picked up his magazine.  Finally! Tommy thought, there’s no place like home!
Tommy’s picture made the front page of the local newspaper the next day along with Mrs Pickles who looked rather like a witch!  I wonder thought Tommy to himself……

Cool maths!

Today I finished my cool maths.
We were designing a garden and measuring it by the length x the width...
  •  I enjoyed drawing the garden.
  • I learnt about square meters.
  • The trickiest part was measuring the grass.
  • I was surprised when I figured out the grass was $723.52 altogether.
  • My buddy and I worked well with  measuring the buildings.

How do plants know which way to grow?
grow a plant with no sunlight
grow a plant in a box with a hole at the top
grow a plant in a box with a hole in the side
  • how high the plant is
  • is the plant tilting
  • the same amount of water
  • is the plant growing?
Do plants use the force of gravity to help them know which way to grow.

Materials

box x3
water
soil
scissors
sunny day
seeds
cup x3

Experimental Setup

fill the three cups with soil and put
a seed in each one, cut holes in the box
one on the top and two on the sides.

Next water the plant and wait.
